Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain & Tech Neck

ReFigure Chiropractic Health Centre in Mosman, on Sydney's Lower North Shore, offers evidence-informed care for neck pain and "tech neck" from screens and desk work. We assess your posture and movement, then use gentle, individualised techniques that aim to relieve strain and help you feel more comfortable and upright.

What causes neck pain and "tech neck"?

Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see us. For many people on the Lower North Shore — office workers, students, tradespeople and busy parents alike — a large part of the day is spent looking down at a laptop, phone or desk. Sustained forward-head posture loads the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back, and over time that can show up as stiffness, aching, reduced movement or tension that creeps into the shoulders.

"Tech neck" isn't a formal medical diagnosis — it's a plain-language term for that screen-and-desk related strain. It's rarely caused by one single thing. Posture, workstation setup, stress, sleep, past injuries and how much you move through the day all play a part. Understanding your particular mix is where good care starts.

How does ReFigure approach neck pain?

Every person starts with an assessment. We take a proper history, look at how your neck and upper back move, and consider your posture as a whole rather than just the sore spot. Our signature approach is Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC) — a full-body manual protocol that looks at posture and biomechanics from the ground up, because the neck rarely works in isolation from the rest of the spine.

Alongside ABC, your chiropractor may use soft-tissue techniques, low-force and activator methods, dry needling or gentle mobilisation, depending on what suits you. Care is always individualised and worked to your comfort — your chiropractor talks you through everything as you go. The aim is to help relieve discomfort, support how your neck moves and give you practical ways to look after it between visits.

Is neck pain linked to headaches?

Often, yes. Tension through the neck and upper shoulders is a recognised contributor to some headaches, which is why we rarely look at one without the other. If headaches are part of your picture, we'll factor that into your assessment — you can read more on our headaches page. The two are closely connected, and addressing neck strain can be a sensible part of the conversation.

What can I do at my desk to help my neck?

Hands-on care works best when it's paired with small, sustainable changes to your day. A few ergonomics tips we often talk through with patients:

  • Raise your screen. Position the top of your monitor at roughly eye level so you're not constantly looking down. A laptop stand plus a separate keyboard makes a real difference.
  • Bring the phone up. Lift your phone towards your eyeline rather than dropping your head to it — the classic "tech neck" position.
  • Move often. Set a reminder to stand, roll your shoulders and look around every 30–45 minutes. Movement matters more than any one "perfect" posture.
  • Support your lower back. A well-set chair that supports your pelvis and lower back helps the whole spine sit better, including your neck.
  • Check your sleep setup. A pillow that keeps your neck roughly neutral — not propped too high or too flat — can ease morning stiffness.

These are general suggestions, not a substitute for an assessment. If your neck pain is persistent, severe, follows an injury, or comes with symptoms like arm weakness, numbness, dizziness or unexplained changes, please seek prompt in-person care so it can be properly evaluated.

A note on what to expect

Everyone's neck, history and goals are different, so outcomes vary from person to person and care is always individualised. We won't promise a quick fix — what we can offer is a careful assessment, gentle and considered care, and honest guidance about what's likely to help. If something is outside our scope or needs another opinion, we're happy to refer you on.

Neck pain FAQs

Can a chiropractor help with neck pain?

Chiropractic care may help with many common, musculoskeletal causes of neck pain and stiffness. At ReFigure in Mosman we assess your posture, movement and history, then use gentle, individualised techniques that aim to relieve discomfort and support how your neck moves. Care is tailored to you, and if something needs another opinion we're happy to refer.

What is tech neck?

"Tech neck" is an everyday term for neck and upper-back strain linked to long hours looking down at phones, laptops and desks. Sustained forward-head posture can load the muscles and joints of the neck. It isn't a formal diagnosis, but the discomfort is real, and small changes to your setup and habits often help alongside hands-on care.

Can neck tension cause headaches?

Tension in the neck and upper shoulders is a recognised contributor to some headaches. Because the two are often linked, we look at your neck when discussing headaches, and vice versa. See our headaches page for more on how we approach this.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for neck pain?

No referral is needed — you can book in directly with ReFigure in Mosman. We're happy to work alongside your GP or other health professionals if that's helpful.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on you — how long the issue has been present, your goals and how your body responds. Outcomes vary from person to person, so your chiropractor talks you through a plan that suits your situation rather than a fixed number.
